Search Engine Optimization: The Basics and The Details!

Ready to learn the secret of ranking higher on google search engine? Well, let us start by saying that there is no secret, and there is no magical recipe!

Does this sound like something different than what you have been told before?

I am 100% sure that you have met A LOT of consultants who claims to have the secret ways, and the hidden doors to rank higher on search engines! But guess what? They are not telling you the whole truth!

Let’s start with the basics!

SEO is not about tricks, or gaming the SEO algorithms…

What you really need is a thorough understanding of what people want when they search – and why they want (or need) it.

The fact that there is no secret, means that we don’t make the rules! And that is very true because search engines do!

So, What are the main pillars of a good SEO strategy?

Search engine optimization can be summed up in the following steps:

· market research

· keyword research

· on-page optimization

· site structure

· link building

· Measuring results

although the above may sound a bit easy and straight forward, but trust me when I say: the devil is in the detail!

The details!

1. Market Research

The first step is to search the major search engines to see what types of websites are ranking for words which you deem to be important.

You may want to start with getting some information about:

  • site age

  • Google PageRank

  • inbound link count

  • outbound link count

2. Keyword Research

Doing your keyword research up-front is a crucial part of great content.

Since you ideally want to include your targeted keyword in your post’s headline and throughout the article, you need to choose your keyword before you start writing.

The search of keywords will take a long time, and will be continuous. But basically what you need to do is to search for relevant keywords to your products, services, competitors, etc… and you will need to consider long tail keywords as well!

3. Site Structure:

Before drafting content consider what keywords are your most important and map out how to create pages to fit each important group of keywords within your site theme and navigational structure.

If you are uncertain how deep to make a portion of the site, start by creating a few high quality pages on the topic. Based on market feedback create more pages in the sections that are most valuable to your business.

4. On Page Optimization

It is hard to rank for keywords that do not appear in your page content, so each page should be organized around the goal of ranking for a specific keyword phrase, with some related phrases and related keywords mixed into the page copy.

Unique descriptive page titles play a crucial role in a successful search engine optimization campaigns. Page titles appear in the search results, and many people link to pages using the page title as their link anchor text.

5. Link Building

Search engines view links as votes, with some votes counting more than others. To get high quality links (that help your site rank better) you need to participate in the social aspects of your community and give away valuable unique content that people talk about and share with others.

6. Measuring Results

How can you tell if your SEO campaign is effective? The bottom line is what counts. Is your site generating more traffic, more leads, higher quality leads, or more sales? What keywords are working? You can look at your server logs and an analytics program to track traffic trends and what keywords lead to conversion.

Always make sure that you set KPIs that will help you determine what is working, and what is not.
